Over the 24+ years of vibration testing 75% of the undetected vibration source is caused by improper mount loading or bad engine mounts.
Other engine drive line components such as the prop or prop shaft represent only 15-30% of the vibration problems
Recently, another source of vibration has been improper prop fit of the prop to the prop shaft. At 92% of recently tested boats the major source of vibration issues are PROP FIT!!!
STATIC CHECK - NATURAL FREQUENCY TEST NFT - in water at dock
This tests for excessive looseness or lack of support at the engine mounts. This tests for critical frequencies that tend to amplify vibrations. Once identified corrections can be made on the spot. This is also used on exhaust systems, props for evaluating fit to prop shaft, rudders, structural members, railings and hull to bulkhead checkDYNAMIC CHECK - in water at dock
The dynamic check is the best way to verify the engine mount are uniformly loaded. The benefits of this test reduces vibration levels to the lowest levels, reduces maintenance and may increase fuel economysea trial - low speed
A low speed sea trial is done to detect problems with drive line components such as the transmissions, prop shaft, alignment, prop imbalance and blade pitch deviations, cutlass bearings, strut alignment and rudder bearings"precision mount loading"
This process has been developed and tested over the last 15 years and found to reduce vibration levels by 50%+ on most boats. Our clients already own a very good product but they want less vibration.

This is not a new test, but have had very good experiences in defining structural integrity to the hull. If the boat is hauled during reconditioning or bottom painting this would be a good time to check struts and rudder posts. It is a simple test that takes several minutes and you will know then whether there is stuctural integrity issue. If gone undected the vibration issues may be harder to resolve.ENGINE OPERATING HARMONICS - new test!!!
This is a new service within the last 9 months. It can be used to detect engine operating condition using vibration amplitudes at certain engine harmonics to diagnose engine problems. The equipment tests and records what is actually occuring within the engine. It has been successfull where traditional electronic computers have failed to diagnose the problem.EXHAUST HARMONICS TEST - NEW TEST!
This test is done at the dock to determine if there is a problem with the lack of cooling water in the exhaust. If the water flow is not sufficient it can be corrected using several methods. This condition can lead to "steam hammer" which can result in serious damage to the exhaust system. This condition is fairly rare but several boats tested last year and was easily corrected once the vibration problem was correctly identified,PROP FIT TEST - NEW TEST!!!
This test is used to check the fit of a prop to the prop shaft. If there is less then 80% contact area between the prop bore and prop shaft taper a good chance for added vibrations. If the vibrations are violent you may end up looseing the prop and part of the prop shaft. This also creates more wear on the cutlass bearings in the aft struts. In some severe prop fit issues it can loosen the struts from the hull. Now you have gone from a prop fit correction to a more difficult and costly process securing the strut to the hull.
